I’ve really enjoyed this summer so far! My soul and my skin are drinking up the sun. In other words, I have both a nice tan and a sunshine-fueled zest for life.

I’ve spent many afternoons walking (strolling) in parks, as well as going through quaint downtown areas, art galleries, museums, etc. I have also been on a few road trips, most notably to the beach.

I want to share a few things I learned this summer about having fun with a disability on a budget –

Sometimes, the best things in life are free. Being outdoors, breathing fresh air doesn’t cost a dime!

Don’t forget to visit local parks, which are often handicap-friendly. Downtown areas are fun to explore, too – pretty much anywhere with sidewalks – though some stores in said areas are unfortunately inaccessible.

Bonus: arboretums and botanical gardens are also fun; some of them are free, but some have a small charge.

When you crave an air conditioning break – which you will if you’re also experiencing 90-degree daily temps, like me – art galleries, plant stores, and museums are awesome!

Art galleries and plant stores are hit-or-miss with accessibility, since they’re privately owned. But museums are usually sponsored by the government, so they must follow ADA guidelines to the letter.

Art galleries and plant stores are great for short bursts of A/C (for instance, on a walk downtown); of course, the products cost money, so just browse if on a budget. Museums, on the other hand, provide HOURS of education and entertainment!

When I visited the beach, I “rented” (for free) a beach chair from the local police department. Being pushed along the shoreline all the way to the pier, as water occasionally sloshed up and wet my sandals, was the best part of the trip for me.

Many beaches offer a similar service. Look into it if you take a coastal vacay this summer!

One common denominator is MOTION. I’ve spent too much time mentally or physically stuck. Most people take their mobility for granted. Even when it’s just the grocery store, I’m happy if I’m out and about.

The other common denominator is FREE. Because frugal girlies will reap tomorrow what they sow today.

What’s your favorite free activity?
