Hi, friends. Ever had a character in a movie, show, or book who you loved to hate? In today’s post, I’m addressing films with similarly unlikable female lead characters. In my opinion, only one of these two protagonists redeems herself by the end.
One Good
Bridesmaids is hilarious. Annie, the lead character, has an unfulfilling love life, but her best friend Lillian just got engaged. The movie follows the comical antics of the bridal party as the wedding gets closer, but Annie’s bitter envy eats at her. Her selfishness comes to a head when she ruins one of the bride’s events with a full-blown temper tantrum, and that’s what you might call her “rock bottom” moment…however, she realizes soon afterwards that she causes most of her own misery, so she implements real changes in her life like getting back into old hobbies. By the end, she’s grown as a person and made up with Lillian.
One Bad
Trainwreck is less hilarious. Amy, the lead character, was raised to believe that monogamy is impractical. She is slutty, and that’s not an insult because she has no qualms about it. She’s also vulgar, telling people she barely knows that she once had a condom stuck in her *cough*. She finally meets a man who she dates and eventually falls for, but the first time they have a serious argument, Amy goes right back to sleeping with anyone. As did Annie in Bridesmaids, Amy mends her broken bridges by the end, but her character development is slight/unconvincing. In my opinion, the underwhelming storyline doesn’t justify the nice conclusion.
Thanks for reading! Agree or disagree?
Love the movie Bridesmaids, and agree with your post on that one. Some truly hilarious moments in that one. I’m sure we can see bits of ourselves in one or more of the characters.( I, too, was NOT maid of honor at my best friends wedding, so i know how it fells when an ‘outsider’ waltzes in and takes your place.) Alas, have not seen the other movie.

I thought Bridesmaids was okay, I’ve only watched it once. Anything with Amy Schumer is garbage. I’m thinking she’s at about 17 minutes, more than 2 minutes past her 15 minutes of fame she never should’ve have earned.

Lol! She actually has a new podcast on Spotify. I imagine the topics are sex and how terrible men are.

Another perspective. I love Amy Schumer. As far as I know, she doesn’t harm others. Instead, it seems to me she’s trying hard to make others laugh. I can’t ask her why she behaves as she does, but I can guess. I think all she wants from me is love. People do all sorts of things to let others know they exist and need love. I struggle with loving those who deliberately hurt others, but I’m working on it. I don’t understand why others write her off as garbage, (aside from hate, spite, prejudice, and intolerance.) The irony is depressing.

I was wondering when/if a fan of Amy would comment! 🙂 Another perspective is always appreciated. I don’t hate her, but her shtick is a bit controversial–the ultra sexually liberated and proud comedy. Some find her stories relatable and entertaining, while some find her style vulgar and not funny. However, I think the true reason she provokes such strong reactions in people is due to her involvement with the modern feminist movement. Whether I agree with people or not, I try to keep an open mind and don’t like devoting much energy to negativity.

I totally agree with you Lily. I’ve not seen any of these films, but I understand where you are coming from. I was recently invited to a Christian ladies film night and the chosen film by the host was Bad Moms. Have you seen it? It was littered with so many sexual words (every female genital part you can think of) F words and blasphemy and the storyline was weak. The host claimed it had ‘a little swearing but it is very funny’. What a waste of a night and an abuse to my senses! You are right to speak out about the not-so-interesting- films. Have you seen any of the Kendrick brothers Christian films? They are such a breath of fresh air, with excellent acting too.

Ah, just realised you actually like Bridesmaids. Well, maybe I might give that one a go then – I’ll trust your judgement 🙂

When I’m not watching a kids movie with my kids, I opt for dark brooding man movies. So in all honesty I will never see these films – your review is good enough for me 😉
